How to Maintain Your Chain Link Fence Year-Round

Chain link fencing is known for being low-maintenance, but a little seasonal attention goes a long way toward keeping it in good shape for decades.

Spring

After winter, walk the fence line and check for loose or rusted fittings, leaning posts, and any sections that may have shifted from frost heave. This is a good time to catch small issues before they grow.

Summer

Vegetation grows fast in Oklahoma summers. Keep grass, vines, and shrubs trimmed back from the fence line, since overgrown plants can trap moisture against the wire and accelerate rust, especially on galvanized fencing.

Fall

Clear fallen leaves and debris away from the base of the fence. This is also a good time to check gate hardware, since hinges and latches that have loosened over the year can be tightened before winter weather sets in.

Winter

Ice and snow can put extra stress on chain link, particularly if branches or debris fall against it. After major storms, do a quick visual check for damage. Avoid leaning heavy snow loads against the fence when shoveling nearby areas.

Year-Round Habits

Rinsing off dirt and grime a few times a year helps preserve the finish, whether galvanized or vinyl-coated. Address rust spots or loose fittings as soon as you notice them rather than waiting.

A small amount of regular attention keeps a chain link fence performing well for many years. If you ever run into an issue you’re not sure how to handle, we’re glad to help.
